- French port and naval station at the northern
- end of the Cotentin peninsula, in Manche
- departement; population (1982) 85,500
- (conurbation). There is an institute for
- studies in nuclear warfare, and Cherbourg has
- large shipbuilding yards. During World War
- II, Cherbourg was captured June 1944 by the
- Allies, who thus gained their first large
- port of entry into France. Cherbourg was
- severely damaged; restoration of the harbour
- was completed 1952. There is a nuclear
- processing plant at nearby Cap la Hague.
- There are ferry links to Southampton,
- Weymouth, and Rosslare.
