  3. departement; population (1982) 85,500
  4. (conurbation). There is an institute for
  5. studies in nuclear warfare, and Cherbourg has
  6. large shipbuilding yards. During World War
  7. II, Cherbourg was captured June 1944 by the
  8. Allies, who thus gained their first large
  9. port of entry into France. Cherbourg was
  10. severely damaged; restoration of the harbour
  11. was completed 1952. There is a nuclear
  12. processing plant at nearby Cap la Hague.

  14. Weymouth, and Rosslare.
